You can find relative information on how crafting works in the game, but lets talk about how it relates to you and how you play. There are a number of basic "categories" we can place the tradeskills: character arming, consumeable creator, decor creator, and gatherer. So lets start with the first broad category.
These skills ultimately will help gear your character out as you level and in the Elder Game. F2P has also brought recent changes that make these far more useful. Weaponsmiths can now craft weapons that are functional for Genetic Archives raid and the Datascape raid - the other Tradeskills mentioned can craft the same level of items for their respective types; Armorer - Heavy | Outfitter - Medium | Tailor - Light. These Tradeskills are the easiest way to gear up with pre raid BiS [ ilvl 88 ].
Main Perk: Quality Gear to Use or Sale - Even for Raiding
Note for Veterans: Items outside basic armor types have been removed from their Tradeskill trees and placed in the Technologists tradeskill tree.
Technologists is a primary tradeskill that crafts boosts of all kinds. They deal with actual Boosts, Medishots (Health Pots!), Field Tech (Boost on the fly), and even Gadgets. In F2P this is one of the more complex tradeskills due to the variety of items that can be crafted. This can result in a larger pool of consumers when considering the best Tradeskill to pick up just for money making purposes.
There are a couple secondary tradeskills that will not affect your two Tradeskills at a time cap, and Cooking is one of them. It is definitely worth picking up and leveling. Cooking will help keep your money in your pocket and make sure you are ready to get the extra edge against some Elder Game bosses.
Main Perk: Stat Boosting Consumeables = Better Gameplay / Profit
There is no doubt the Housing feature in Wildstar is robust. Architect fits perfectly into this feature as you can create decor items for yourself or other players. While this may not be your "thing" it can often generate a decent amount of revenue from the AH and also help fill your house with the "Large" decor items to maximize your Housing's rested XP bonus.
Main Perk: Housing decor + XP Bonus + Auction House = Profit
Tradeskills require materials in order to craft your items (duh), and these are the Tradeskills that provide those materials. A player can gather mats from crafting reward bags that are found throughout various reward systems but these are the skills to have in order to supplement your other chosen Tradeskill. If you find it dull traversing Nexus for materials don't worry! There are Housing plugs that are tied to each of these gathering skills. If you wanted to further boost your gathering income, you can also join gathering Circles that allow you to gather resources from other player's housing plugs. Just ask in Zone chat while at your House. If you are looking to make a profit these are the Tradeskills for you!
Farming is in a category of it's own and consists of gathering plants around Nexus. You can add an upgradeable Farm plug to your housing to plant seeds that are collected from these plants. If you are going for a self sustaining method or looking to make extra money then you should definitely have this on your Housing plot and in your daily rotation.
Main Perk: High Profit vs Time Reward
While certain tradeskills are practically made for each other, you can chose any two Tradeskills to pick up. If you have the time on your hands then two gathering skills can turn a good profit - keep in mind you can only have one gathering plug on your housing plot at a time, the farming plug being the exception to this rule.
- Keep your Gathering Tools up to date with the Gathering Skill level.
- Some resource nodes will unlock secret resource levels, watch the timer and your map for the best nodes to harvest first.
- You can set how much your Gathering plugs share with neighbors in your Residence Settings.
- Harvesting Circles - be sure to ask in your Housing Zone chat so you can create a trade empire with your neighbors!
- Tradeskill Work Boards are usually at your local quest hub - Best way to level your Tradeskill!
